Description

My new drawing tools... somehow much better than my first collection some 9 months ago...

UPDATE: Check out my digital painting, "Surreal: The Lake of Contemplation" [link]. I've been experimenting with merging digital painting with some of my graphite/pencil arts, and it is one of my firsts.

Below are my drawing materials as of March 28, 2012.

A. Techno compass set [MAPED]
So far, this set is the best cheapest collection I can find. I use them when I draw sketches of circles...

B. Stabilo Graphite Pencils 2, 1, 2, 1 [left to right]
I use two 1s and two 2s. In each pair, one is sharp and the other dull. Friends sometimes ask why I use two identical pencils when I can use one. "Sharp one for crisp lines, dull one for shades" is what I usually tell them.

C. Staedler Graphite Pencils 2H, B, 8B [left to right]
2H makes a good sketcher. I also use this for drawing birds in the air.
B makes a good light shader.
8B makes a good dark shader [but kinda rough though, so I have to use the stump for this].

D. Mongol Graphite Pencils 3, 2, 1 [left to right]
Salute! There's the big three classics!
No.3 is for sketching, No.2 for outlining, No.1 for shading --- perfect matches!

E. First Pencil Graphite Pencils 2, 2, 2B [left to right]
First Pencil is some kind of a competitor of Mongol. They say they're since 1935...
The difference between the two No.2s there is that the black one is Blackwood and has a 5-inch rule on one side --- perfect for a desperate student who left his ruler... The black and yellow one has nothing much special.
2B of First Pencil is very smooth, perfect for smooth shading.

F. Stabilo Graphite Pencils 2.5, 2.5 [left to right]
They write pretty cool. I keep one dull and the other sharp.

G. Zeichenkohle 117400 Medium Charcoal Pencil
This is for darker [it's kinda brown] rough shades.

H. Derwent Light Charcoal Pencil
When applied lightly, you can smudge it to give some shadow effect. Those who've used this can understand what I mean.

I. Clique 0.5mm Mechanical Pencil HB
I use this for crisp detailed lines, as well as to shade trees. This is one of my main tools.

J. Faber Castell 0.5mm Mechanical Pencil 2B
I use this for softer details and soft shades.

K. Eraser; from top to bottom: FLOMO EcoEraser, Stabilo Exam Grade Eraser, Faber Castell Vinyl Eraser, Amspec Fun Eraser, Faber Castell Knetgummi Art Eraser
FLOMO Eco Eraser makes clean corrections.
Stabilo makes a good area cleaner. It doesn't have much dust. In fact, this is a dustless eraser.
Faber Castell is a common eraser, as well as the Amspec.
The Faber Castell Kneaded Eraser is my favorite. Check out Mike Sibley's website and look for the 'blu-tack' thing. This kneaded eraser that I have works much alike... and I can say this is a must-have for graphite and charcoal artists.

L. Maped Scissors
Anyone there who does not know what scissors are for?

M. Pals Mechanical Eraser
With this, you can sharpen it and just erase while doing it like a pencil.

N. Improvised stump
I just rolled a sheet of newsprint and turned it to one of my best tools --- my magic blender.

O. Blending Stump No.5
This is really bigger than what I want, but the store only has this kind. I use this to blend shades.

P. Magnifier 3.5X
I use this to draw detailed drawings.

Q. Mechanical Pencil refills
The red one is for 2B Faber Castell Mechanical Pencil, and the other two for HB.

R. Protractor
I use this with the rulers. Everybody knows how to use protractors, right?

S,T. Eterna Brush #1 and #7
I use these to keep away dust from erasures off the paper. I don't use my hand to do so, because the hand has oil and may smear with graphite.

U. Indenting tool
I don't know how to explain this clearly, but I'll try anyway.
When there's a groove on the paper and you shade that part, you notice the groove remains unshaded, right? I use this tool to make light impressions on dark shades.

V, W. Orions 12" and 6"
We all know how to use rulers.

X,Y. Sharpeners, wood and metal
There's no big difference with their use --- just to sharpen.

Z. Shadow References.
This is where it gets weird: stones as shadow references. Not a lot artists use 'em, but I'm using them anyway. I use them to study how shadows play with round, smooth, jagged, and/or rough surfaces.
